Physical Education

John Evko with a studentStudents in kindergarten through fifth grade enjoy a 45-minute physical education resource class once every week. We’ve designed our program to emphasize movement, skills, and wellness concepts. We direct these learning experiences toward helping each student develop an enjoyment of leisure-time activities, physical fitness, and a healthy lifestyle.

The design of the curriculum includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Kindergarten through second graders are involved in activities that develop basic locomotor and nonlocomotor movements, manipulative skills, cooperative play, physical fitness, perceptual motor skills, and lead-up games.

  • Third through fifth graders are involved in orientation to fitness testing, low organization games and relays, lead-up games/sports, physical fitness, fitness testing, skill practice, and basic health concepts.

Other components of the program include:

  • Kite Flying - During the month of March, third, fourth, and fifth-grade students participate in this activity.

  • Kids Heart Challenge - We hold this fundraising event in the winter to help the American Heart Association fight heart disease. Second through fifth grade students participate in this activity.

  • Students playing volleyball in gym class

Field Day - All grades participate in this event during the spring.

  • Fitness Testing - We conduct fitness testing in September and in May. We test third through fifth-grade students in five areas of fitness. Fourth and fifth-grade students are eligible for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

  • Walk-Jog-Run Club - Our running club meets after school once a week in the fall and spring for students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades. Participants track their progress and receive rewards for their completion of laps.
