Teachers working with studentLiteracy Instruction at Elmont

Our language arts goal is to increase student achievement and interest in literacy. We foster a love of literacy through our read alouds, shared readings, mini-lessons, and guided reading and by providing students with opportunities to discuss and write about their learning. These authentic literacy events model how to be strategic readers for our students. Our students apply their reading strategies during their independent time in their balanced literacy block. Instructors constantly observe and assess student work to best meet the literacy needs of our students. All instruction incorporates the Virginia Standards of Learning and Hanover County expectations.

Through observation and assessment, we can determine students who are not meeting standards and who would benefit from our reading interventions provided by our reading specialist and Title One supplemental reading specialist. Our interventions include Reading Recovery, Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), and SOL tutors.

Math Intervention

Math Intervention at Elmont focuses on providing supplemental math instruction in the classroom setting by providing additional teaching and math resources to support students' mathematical understanding and achievement. Currently, Allison Kahl and Karen Shrader support Elmont’s K–5 student math learning by providing before-school tutoring (Number Club), small guided math groups in classrooms during math block, and “Lunch and Learn” opportunities to strengthen math facts. Our intervention helps ensure that students and teachers hold to high expectations for all Elmont students as they work to meet challenging state and achievement standards.
